Calling all coffee lovers! I am the first one to admit that I am addicted to the warm, comfort of a fresh cup of joe. But trying to live a healthy lifestyle doesn’t lend itself well to the frothy goodness of lattes, mochas and grande frappucinos. Many of these delicious treats are coated in caramel or mixed with chocolate syrup, making them more of a dessert than a morning drink and the extra calories are not so friendly to your waistline.
But there is a better way. Bulletproof coffee was introduced to coffee lovers a few years ago and has only gained popularity since. It’s a better alternative to drinking large, calorie-filled coffee drinks. The best part is that it gives you an extra boost of energy besides the caffeine and uses ingredients that are incredible for your body. It’s easy to make and delicious enough to replace your usual Starbucks order.
There are a variety of ways to make bulletproof coffee. Some people like coconut oil, some people like butter, some add ingredients like cinnamon or nutmeg and others keep it simple and focus on the taste of the coffee itself. My favorite version of this drink is a mixture of these ingredients and I think that’s what makes it delicious.
Ingredients
- 8 oz. coffee
- 1 Tbs. organic, grass-fed butter
- 1 Tbs. organic, unrefined coconut oil
- 3-4 drops liquid stevia (or 1-2 Tbs. powdered stevia)
- 1/4 tsp. cinnamon (optional)
Instructions
- Put your butter and coconut oil in a microwavable mug and microwave it in 10 second intervals until it's completely melted.
- Brew a fresh cup of your favorite coffee.
- Using a blender (a single serving blender works best), blend your coffee, stevia, and melted butter and coconut oil.
- Pour mixture back into a mug, sprinkle with cinnamon and enjoy!
Tips: When I first tried bulletproof coffee, I heard tons of people talk about how creamy it was and how it was just like a latte from a coffee shop and I didn’t understand. The recipes I saw just said to add coconut oil to your coffee and all I ended up with was an oily mess. It wasn’t until I blended it that I discovered how decadent it can be! So while you can just add the above ingredients to a cup of coffee, the blending of your coffee is what makes it frothy and delicious!
You can also alter the ingredient amounts based on your taste. If you want the drink to be creamier, add more butter than oil, or if you prefer the taste of coconut oil, feel free to add more coconut oil than butter. Whatever your preference, try it today and make it your own!
If you’re someone who likes a little extra flavor, but you still want to keep it lean, try making your bulletproof coffee with flavored coffee.
