What On Earth Is Cashewgurt?
Cashewgurt is exactly what it sounds like…yogurt made out of cashews. And regardless of whether or not you can eat dairy, it’s going to be the next best thing you’ve ever eaten!
Who Came Up With This Stuff?
This amazing “faux-gurt” was created by a company called Forager Project. It’s a small, family-owned brand focused on bringing organic, plant-based foods to shelves everywhere.
They have an extensive line of dairy free products including Cashewmilk, Cashewgurt, smoothies, juices and snacks but we’ll focus on their Cashewgurt.
First and foremost, let’s look at the taste because when it comes to food, that’s really what matters most! And Forager Project definitely does not skimp on taste! They offer a variety of flavors including:
- Plain
- Wild Blueberry
- Strawberry
- Vanilla Bean
- Cherry
- Lemon
- Coconut
My favorite flavors are the vanilla bean, wild blueberry and strawberry, but all of their flavors are amazing!
What About The Texture?
My experience with dairy-free yogurt alternatives in the past has resulted in runny, separated messes that weren’t even appetizing enough to try. But Cashewgurt is different! It’s so incredibly creamy that if you didn’t know it wasn’t made out of dairy, you would have no idea!
And it’s so incredibly smooth, which makes it perfect for tons of different recipes, including smoothies, parfaits and smoothie bowls, or even just to eat on its own.
What About The Ingredients?
My second favorite thing about cashewgurt is the ingredient list. I truly appreciate all their effort to create a product that is so healthy and natural.
It’s Organic!
Cashewgurt is made from certified organic cashews, which means that you can trust where it comes from.
Non-GMO
This is always an important label to look for on anything you eat. Non-GMO means that the food has not been genetically modified. Unfortunately, a large portion of foods on shelves today is genetically modified, meaning that producers and manufacturers are changing the genetic make-up of the foods they serve and it, in turn, can have negative effects on your body.
Free of Lactose, Gluten & Soy
The fact that Forager Project foods are lactose, gluten and soy free is extremely important to me and my family because of our dairy and gluten allergies. Even though we aren’t allergic to soy, increased levels of soy have been linked to hormonal issues, especially in women, and it’s a good idea to cut it out when you can.
Kosher
To top it all off, all of the Forager Project Cashewgurt varieties are kosher, meaning that they are free of meat derivatives and artificially processed additives, like gelatin.
Show Me The Facts! (The Nutrition Facts)
Another important aspect of any food is the nutrition content. After all, even if a food is all-natural, it may still be high in calories or sugar and could still deter your healthy eating efforts.
Sugar
Many dairy-based yogurts, especially flavored varieties, are full of sugar! And if you think you’re avoiding this problem by consuming the sugar free kind, you’re actually hurting yourself even more with all of the artificial sugars you’re consuming instead.
However, that’s not the case at all with Cashewgurt. Not only is it all-natural, but it’s also low in sugar. Their Unsweetened, Plain Cashewgurt has just 1 gram of sugar for an 8 oz. serving.
Even their flavored varieties have less sugar than other store-bought brands. Comparing apples to apples, their Vanilla Bean Cashewgurt contains 12 grams of sugar compared to Yoplait’s French Vanilla Yogurt, which comes in at 26 grams per serving. And the rest of their flavors also have just 12 grams of sugar.
Calories
All of their Cashewgurt varieties are also under 200 calories, which is the perfect amount for a snack by itself, or with fruit for a meal.
Protein
If you thought you’d be missing out on your protein because Cashewgurt is dairy-free, then you’re in for a surprise. All of the Cashewgurt flavors have 2-4 grams of protein per serving, the highest being their Unsweetened Plain Cashewgurt.
Probiotics
Cashewgurt still has the probiotics you want in yogurt. These probiotics improve your gut health and help you digest other foods as well.
Did I Mention They’re Affordable?
The third best thing about Cashewgurt is that it’s extremely affordable, especially when compared to other non-dairy yogurt brands. I purchase Cashewgurt in 5.3 oz. containers for about $1.75 each on Jet.com. Most of the other non-dairy brands are around $2.50 for one serving.
Where Can I Get Cashewgurt?
