DIY All-Natural Mascara and Eye Liner

When it comes to make-up, the more natural, the better, in my opinion. In fact, I like to keep everything I put on my face as natural as possible. Making your own make-up isn’t as hard as it sounds. If you’ve seen my post on All-Natural Powder Foundation, you can see just how easy it can be to create a beautiful, glowing look with simple, natural ingredients.

Making mascara and eye liner is just as easy. In fact, the same recipe can be used to create both, saving time and money! And the best part about it for me is that store-bought mascara and eye liner tend to make my eyes water. And then once your eyes start to water, you get them in your eyes and that makes them water even more. It’s a vicious cycle that leads to a blurry mess and its super annoying. However, I haven’t had that problem with this recipe. If you have this problem, try it for yourself and see if it works for you as well as it does for me!

Why Make Natural Mascara?

Even if you don’t react poorly to store-bought mascara, it contains tons of things that quite frankly, you really shouldn’t have anywhere near your eyes!

Parabens – These nasty little preservatives are everywhere in the cosmetic and beauty industry. You may have heard about them lately because so many companies are starting to remove them from their products (thankfully!). Basically, they mimic estrogen in your body and mess with your hormone levels. This is thought to possibly lead to issues like breast cancer, though there is not enough correlation to make it a fact. Regardless, it’s a good idea to avoid them whenever possible.

Retinyl Acetate – This is a synthetic form of Vitamin A that is used to moisturize. However, it’s also a reproductive toxin and possible carcinogen.

Diazolidinyl Urea – This is a preservative that releases formaldehyde, a known carcinogen. This means it can lead to cancer. Avoid it whenever possible!

Fragrance (Parfum) – While it may seem harmless to add fragrance to a beauty product, that label can actually hide a lot of toxic substances like hormone disruptors and carcinogens.

How to Make Natural Mascara and Eye Liner

So let’s get right down to it. Remember, this recipe works for either mascara or eye liner. The only difference is the container you store it in. It will be more of a liquid eye liner, but it still works well.

DIY All-Natural Mascara and Eye Liner

Ingredients

  • 2 tsp. coconut oil
  • 1 1/2 tsp. bees wax
  • 1 tsp. shea butter
  • 4 tsp. aloe vera gel
  • 1-2 activated charcoal capsules

Instructions

  1. Put the coconut oil, bees wax, shea butter and aloe vera gel in a medium saucepan and melt until completely combined.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in the inside of the activated charcoal capsules.
  3. Pour the mixture into a small ziploc bag and let it all run into one corner.
  4. Cut a small hole in the corner of the bag and pour the mixture into a clean, empty mascara container or a small container for eye liner.

TIP: If you’re using this recipe to make eye liner, I would recommend using 2 tsp. of bees wax because it will help it set up more and make it easier to apply and keep on.

This mixture typically lasts about 3-4 months. After that, make sure you discard it to make sure you don’t get any bacteria in your eyes.

BONUS TIP: If you want to condition your eye lashes, after removing your make-up at night, use a clean mascara wand and some melted coconut oil or just use the coconut oil to remove your eye make-up and kill two birds with one stone. The oil will condition and strengthen your eye lashes overnight, making them grow faster and stronger.
